|
Situated to the north of the Spanish Steps, Villa Borghese is the biggest public park in the city of Rome. The main entrances to Villa Borghese, the pleasing shelter from the busy life in Rome, are at the Porta Pincia and the Piazza del Popolo. During the 16th century Villa Borghese was a vineyard which was transformed into a park in 1605 by the nephew of Pope Paul V, Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Landscapist Domenico Savino da Montepulciano planned a schematic park with various geometrical shapes and making Villa Borghese one of the parks of this category. The famous architect Flaminio Ponzio constructed a villa at the selected spot following the drawing made by Scipione Borghese. In the later years Villa Borghese was planned in a more unconventional way. An artificial lake was created at the centre of Villa Borghese during the later years of the 18th century. A small Ionic temple sanctified to the God of healing, Aesculapius, was constructed on the island at the lake.

Other outstanding pavilions were that of Egypt, Sweden, Denmark and Austria.
