Vatican City

Vatican City is a self-governing city state, its territory being comprised of a surrounded dominion within Rome. Covering an area of about 44 hectares, Vatican City is the smallest sovereign nation in the entire world. Formed by the Lateran Treaty in 1929 as a remnant of the much bigger Papal States, Vatican City is a chosen kingdom which is governed by Pope, the Bishop of Rome and the highest official posts are held by the clergymen of the Roman Catholic Church. Vatican City, the independent province of the Holy See and the site for the Roman Curia and the formal residence of Pope can be held as the administrative capital of the Catholic Church.

The name of Vatican City is pre-Christian derived from the Latin term “Mons Vaticanus” , the Vatican Hill, the Vatican City being presently a part of the “Mons Vaticanus” and formerly a division of the Roman rione of Borgo till 1929. Pope is the administrative head as well as the head of the state of Vatican City. He is also the primal bishop of the Diocese of Rome and the Catholic Church’s Supreme Pontiff. The entirety of his supremacy and idyllic ministry is expressed by the term “Holy See”. As the official head of the Vatican City, Pope is titled the “Sovereign of the State of Vatican City”. The government of the Roman Catholic Church is an independent realm selected by the College of Cardinals. Pope is in fact, the supreme power who controls the administration of the Vatican City, his powers being comprised of the executive, legislative and judicial powers. At present, Vatican City is being governed by Pope Benedict XVI, the Secretary of the State of Vatican City being Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone. Having its own economy and administration, Vatican City has its own army, the Swiss Guard, the oldest and smallest army in the whole world. Vatican City also has its own police service, fire brigade, railway station, publishing house, electricity generating plants, bank and commissary apart from having its own mint.
