Trevi Fountain

The biggest of the Roman Baroque fountains is the 85 feet high and 65 feet broad Trevi Fountain in the rione of Trevi. Situated in the Quirinale district, the Trevi Fountain is most attractive fountain in Rome. Trevi Fountain is located at the endmost point of the Aqua Virgo as an old aqueduct at the meeting point of three roads. A source of clear water, the Salon Springs, was placed by the Roman technicians in 19 B.C 13 km away from Rome. Aqua Virgo carried water to the Baths of Agrippa and it served the city for over 400 years.

Pope Urban VIII ordered Bernini for making new plans which were disposed of due to Pope’s death. Bernini wanted to relocate the Trevi Fountain for facing the Quirinal Palace from another side of the Trevi Square. Pope Clement XII hired Nicola Salvi, who won the competition arranged by the pope in 1730 for creating a big fountain at the Trevi Square. The construction of the Trevi Fountain was initiated in 1732 and was completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762. The Trevi Fountain was renovated in 1998, the stonework being scoured and the fountain being supplied with re-distributing pumps.

The setting for the Trevi Fountain is Palazzo Poli which has attributed a new frontage to the Trevi Fountain with numerous Corinthian pillars connecting the two stories of the building. The theme of the massive system of tumbling waters in the Trevi Fountain is the “Taming of the Waters”. The figure in front of a huge slot at the centre of the Trevi Fountain is of the god of the sea, Neptune who is riding a horse-pulled chariot which is shaped as a shell. Each of these sea horses is led by Triton, one of these horses being calm and obedient and the other restive. The statue on the right of Neptune is of Salubrity and that on the left is of Abundance. One of the bas-relief sculptures is of Agrippa with a strong central overlying and exultant arch. According to a tradition, it is believed that if people throw a coin in to the Trevi Fountain, they have to come back to Rome. The coin must be thrown over the shoulders.
