St. Peter’s Basilica

The magnificence of the center of Christianity in the city of Rome, St. Peter’s Basilica reflects the prosperity of the 16th century Catholic Church. St. Peter’s Basilica on the Vatican Hill was constructed following the orders of the first Christian emperor of Rome, Emperor Constantine.

The site where St. Peter’s Basilica is situated is the location where the chief apostle Saint Peter was entombed in 64 A.D. A small memorial had been there already which was replaced by the new building of St. Peter’s Basilica in about 349 A.D. Pope Nicholas V ordered the restitution and extension of St. Peter’s Basilica following the plans made by Bernando Rossellino. But after the demise of Pope Nicholas V the work of constructing the building was brought to a stop. Pope Julius II laid the foundation stone of the new St. Peter’s Basilica. For the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica Julius II selected Donato Bramante who was succeeded by Michelangelo in 1547. Michelangelo planned the present structure of the dome and changed few earlier made plans. St. Peter’s Basilica was consecrated by Pope Urban VIII in 1626, Michelangelo dying two years prior to the completion of the construction of the dome in 1624.

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most outstanding structures of the world, apart from being the biggest church in the whole world with a 218 meter long central area. The 42 meter broad and 138 meter high dome of St. Peter’s Basilica which was planned by Michelangelo is the biggest dome in the entire world. The interior portion of St. Peter’s Basilica contains 45 altars which were adorned by a number of popular artists few of the prominent works being the papal altar and the Throne of St. Peter by Bernini, the Monument to the Stuarts by the famous artist Antonio Canova and the Pieta by Michelangelo.
