Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps or Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti is the famous set of steps in the city of Rome which has been attracting tourists for years. The Spanish Steps leads the way to the Trinita dei Monti, the famous French church which functioned under the sponsorship of the Bourbon Kings. The Spanish Steps is no doubt, the broadest and longest staircase in the entire continent of Europe. The enormous stairway of the Spanish Steps which is comprised of 138 steps was constructed in 1723-1725 with the contributions made by Etienne Gueffer, the French envoy with a support of 20,000 scudi. The Spanish Steps linked the Holy See to the Bourbon Spanish Embassy, the Holy See being remaining till date in Palazzo Monaldeschi with the Trinita dei Monti atop and the Piazza di Spagna beneath.

The Spanish Steps were designed by the less-popular Francesco de Sanctis who won a competition in the year of 1717. A large number of discussions about how the Spanish Steps should lead the way to he church were held prior to the final implementation of the plan. Archival drawings dating back to the 1580s makes it apparent about how Pope Gregory XIII wanted to build a stairway to the newly finished portico of Trinita dei Monti. In the Galleria Nazionale in the city of Rome, the views of Gaspar van Wittel regarding the design of the Spanish Steps have been kept. Cardinal Mazarin was personally interested in the total project and confided in his Roman agent. With Cardinal Mazarin’s death in 1661, Pope’s death in 1667 and half of Gueffier’s property being taken over by one of his nephews, the construction of the Spanish Steps was bought to a stop until the renewal of interest of Pope Clement XI Albani. Innocent XIII’s crown and eagle as well as the Bourbon fleur-de-lys are wisely balanced in the architectural details. At present, the Spanish Steps includes a small flower market, the Spanish Steps being decorated with potted azaleas in the month of May.
