Montemartini Art Centre

If you love art, then do not forget to keep Montemartini Art Centre or Centrale Montemartini, as it is popularly called, in your itinerary. This fascinating place will definitely leave you overwhelmed. Built in the place of the old powerhouse of Rome, Montemartini Art Centre houses the machines from the first traces of modernity that touched Rome. But the main feature of this museum is perhaps the fabulous juxtaposition of the modern with the ancient, with the placement of some of the sculptures and statues in marbles from the time of Roman Antiquity.

As you walk though the museum, the silence prevailing in the interiors will seem to tell you something in your ears, the stories of the time of the Roman civilization, depicted by the four hundred statues displayed through out the Montemartini Art Centre. All of these are unique, and if had not been preserved in this museum, glorious art and sculpture would have been lost to time for ever. The place a great treat to all the art lovers across the world. The statues placed in Montemartini Art Centre were however, brought in for from the Capitoline Museums during the times of renovation of the Museums, but were kept forever here, to add beauty to a place, which depicted raw modernity in the machines, to which a feminine touch was added with the placement of the statues.

TThe statues were excavated during the years between 1890 and 1930, and all of them belong to the times when the Roman imperialism was at its peak. Many of the statues also belonged to the gardens that were so fondly built by the emperors and the higher officials as part of adding beauty to their home.

Montemartini Art Centre has on display on its ground floor, the earliest collections of the statues belonging also to the Etruscan Temple, which was full of rich decorations. The first floor, however, has the main galleries, where two enormous diesel motors are kept, that were made by the firm named Tosi in the year 1933. But main attractions are the queerly placed marble statues and busts around these engines.

You can easily get to the Montemartini Art Centre, as it is centrally located at Via Ostiense and if you think if you have finished seeing all the statues, then do not forget to get to the fifth floor of the museum from where you can get breathtaking views of river Tiber and the abandoned shipyards to the Southern part of Trastevere.
