Fori Imperiali

Rome, the capital city of Italy today and the Roman Empire in the past, holds numerous ruins from the times of the Roman Antiquity which show the power of the emperors of the time. One of the most important areas of tourism and archaeology is the Fori Imperiali, or the Imperial Forums, that were built over a time period spanning almost one century. Fori Imperiali is the place in Rome, most visited by archaeologists from across the globe, as excavations are still being carried on in this place in search for more details and insight into the life and social conditions in the Roman times. Fori Imperiali makes for very interesting tourist attraction in Rome City.

The Fori Imperiali or Imperial Forums were built in the midst of the city of Rome, and although very little remains of the forums, they still tell a lot of tales in silence. One of the most important and well preserved forums of the Fori Imperiali is the Caesar Forum which was built in the years somewhere between 54 BC and 46 BC by Julius Caesar. He built this forum out of his own expenses primarily to prove his power and to facilitate the public and help meet their needs. The excavations depict, there could have been shops around near this Caesar Forum, and also offices of money exchangers and a temple dedicated to Venus Genetrix.

Some of the other forums of Fori Imperiali that have been excavated include:

  • Forum of Augustus, which was built by Augustus in the 2nd Century BC, was built to avenge the murder of Julius Caesar. But almost nothing remains of this except for the three columns that were part of the Temple of Mars Ultor.

  • Forum of Peace, which was built in 69 A.D. and 79 A.D., was originally called the Forum of Emperor Vespasian. It was built by the emperor out of the booty and treasure he receives from the win in the Jewish War.

  • Forum of Trajan, which was built in the years 107 to 143 Century A.D., is the only best preserved of the Fori Imperiali and was built by Emperor Trajan to reflect the power of his empire and comprises of a complex of buildings, a temple and bascilica, surrounded by extensive markets.

All the Fori Imperiali are connected by newly constructed passageways, to facilitate tourists view the famous excavations.
