Catacombs of St. Domitilla |
|
|
Rome is a large repository of numerous tourist attractions, from the ancient, middle as well as modern ages. Amongst some of the most interesting of these tourist attractions in Rome City, are the catacombs, which throw light on the ancient procedure of Christian burial underground in tunnels cut out of rock. Rome city and the outskirts of Rome are home to many such catacombs, which were used for burial purposes by Christians and Pagan alike. The early Roman Christians did not have proper burial place or cemeteries, but their resentment of the process of burning the bodies of the dead led to the formation of the catacombs, where long tunnels were carved out of soft rock, sometimes going deep down and many impenetrable and inaccessible. Amongst the most impressive of these are the catacombs of St. Domitilla.

St. Domitilla is believed to be the related to the emperors Domitian and Vespasian, and after her martyr Christians and pagans were allowed to be buried in her family burial ground. Ever since then, numerous bodies have been buried in this 15 km long catacomb, each of them buried in slits. Those with better family background and very good financial status got better and larger catacombs for themselves with beautifully carved and decorated arches and vaults for the family members
You will require entering the catacombs of St. Domitilla through the entrance of a sunken underground church with beautiful columns and fragments made of marble. As you enter, you will find many fresco paintings on the walls, which are visible even till date, with the fresco of Last Supper being the most impressive. The catacombs of St. Domitilla are perhaps the most well preserved catacombs of all the ones in Rome. Of the four floors of the catacombs of St. Domitilla, only two are accessible and when you go sight seeing in this place with the guides, the total time take can be from twenty hours to one hour.
Although the catacombs of St. Domitilla are located at the distance, little further away from the main catacomb sightseeing direction, the journey will be worth every effort put in. These catacombs of St. Domitilla are opened for public view from Wednesday to Monday from 8.30 am to noon and 2.30 pm to 5 pm. In January however, the catacombs of St. Domitilla are closed for the entire month.
