Set up by the Malta’s House of Representatives Resolution, Air Malta came to life on 21st March 1973 and got registered as a limited liability company on 30th March 1973. It has also received the Service Licence valid for ten years with effect from 1st April 1973. Air Malta is aimed at establishing, maintaining, developing and operating air transport services to and from Malta which, by the carriage of passengers, freight and mail, serve the national interest. With two wet-leased Boeing 720Bs from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Air Malta started flying operations on 1st April 1974 with scheduled services to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Rome, Frankfurt, Paris and Tripoli. Air Malta now serves around 50 destinations in Europe, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Air Malta presently has a fleet of aircraft consisting Airbus A320s, Airbus A319s and Boeing 737-300s. Air Malta announced it’s receiving of the award of the ISO 9001-2000 certification by Moody International Certification Ltd for its airside ground handling services in July 2004.
