This foundation of Olympic Airways dates back to 1930s. This airline on its foundation was called Icarus but die to its bankruptcy Greek Company for Air Transport took it over and at the same time a second airline was created in 1935 privately owned by Technical and Aeronautical Exploitations. Following the 2nd world war the third airline was established under the name of Hellenic Airlines. These airlines were merged into the Hellenic National Airlines due to their poor financial conditions. An agreement was made between the Hellenic State and Greek shipping-magnate Aristotle Onassis in July 1956 to sell the company. The new company prospered rapidly and in 1960 the Olympic Airways first jet aircraft the De Havilland Comet 4B came to service. Olympic Airways was officially born on 6th April 1957. Olympic and British airline, at the same time agreed to create the first code share flights. OA purchased the new NAMC YS-11 turboprop aircraft in 1971 to replace the aging Douglas DC-3 and Douglas DC-6, used for domestic network of the company. Greece was linked to Australia in 1972 for the first time.
