This foundation of Olympic Airways dates back to 1930s. This airline on its foundation was called Icarus but die to its bankruptcy Greek Company for Air Transport took it over and at the same time a second airline was created in 1935 privately owned by Technical and Aeronautical Exploitations. OA purchased the new NAMC YS-11 turboprop aircraft in 1971 to replace the aging Douglas DC-3 and Douglas DC-6, used for domestic network of the company. Greece was linked to Australia in 1972 for the first time.
